5 Ways To Make Yourself Unappealing To Mosquitoes
Mosquitos are a nuisance in humid and warm weather. These little pests can ruin outdoor activities, and they may transmit diseases such as the Zika virus and West Nile virus.
There are many products and remedies that claim to repel mosquitoes, including citronella candles and spices such as garlic and cinnamon. There is no evidence to support any of the claims made.
These five tips have been shown to reduce the risk of getting bitten by mosquitoes:
Do not enter still water
Mosquitoes lay eggs near stagnant, fresh water .
Avoid these areas if you are spending time outside. Remove or clean up any water sources that could attract mosquitoes. This includes bird baths or kiddie pools.
Wear Protective Clothing
Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks outdoors when the weather allows. Mosquitoes can bite any exposed skin, so you should cover as much of your body as possible. The best protection is thicker clothing that doesn’t have holes or loose weave.
You may also buy clothing that is pre-treated to repel mosquitoes or insecticide.
Apply Insect Repellent
Use insect repellents as directed to avoid mosquito bites. Most repellents contain DEET, but for a more natural option, try products that contain “para-methane 3-8, diol”, an extract of the lemon-eucalyptus tree.
To ensure safe and proper application, follow the instructions on the label.
Avoid Sweating
Mosquitoes will bite you if they are attracted by your sweat and breath. You may be more attractive to mosquitoes if you engage in intense physical activity.
Avoid strenuous activity during mosquito-active times. Take frequent breaks to cool off and catch your breath if you are forced to be outdoors at these times.
You may be more attractive to mosquitoes if you drink alcohol. This is probably due to mosquitoes being attracted by the resulting smells.
Use an Outdoor Fan
Windy weather tends to reduce mosquito bites. It is possible that the moving air spreads the body odors which attract mosquitoes.
Installing an outdoor fan in areas where you will be spending time outside can help create a windy atmosphere that makes it harder for mosquitoes and other insects to find you. It also keeps you cool.
Treating Mosquito Bites
Avoid scratching if you are bitten by a mosquito. This can cause the skin to break and increase the risk of infection.
Use antihistamine or hydrocortisone to soothe the itch. Use a cold compress on the area to reduce swelling. Aloe Vera gel is helpful in the healing process.
See a doctor if you feel ill or the bite looks abnormal.
